 Tour Description
     
SATURDAY
DAY I
Upon arrival, meeting and greeting by our personnel at the Iquitos airport. Transfer to your hotel. On the way you will briefly sightsee the city.
Overnight.

SUNDAY
DAY II

Breakfast at the hotel early in the morning.
Transfer to the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserved Zone, located 15 miles from Iquitos, near the road that connects this city with Nauta. This reserve accounts 57,600 ha. of white sand protected forest in which we find 300 tree species per ha., 130 reptile species, 460 bird species from which at least six are original of this kind of forest. Recently, another endemic specie named Gentry´s Antbird (herpsilochmus-gentry) has been discovered.

Just getting to the reserve, a walk following one of the trails will allow you to spot some species as: many banded aracari, white-throated toucan, several trogons, woodpeckers, wanakins and also antbirds.

1 p.m. Lunch at the reserve’s Research Center facilities.
3 p.m. Hike and birding. It will be possible for you to spot the Pompadour Cotinga. It is also possible to see colorful birds that have made this their favorite home.
7 p.m. After sunset, walk in the forest to find night species, as the great potoo, the rufus potoo, the tropical screech owl amongst others.

Supper and overnight in the Research Center’s facilities.

MONDAY
DAY III

5.30 a.m. Walk around the reserve to observe the screaming piha. The male makes a loud cry to let others know it’s dominions and to attract females.
7.30 a.m. Along the Iquitos-Nauta road it will also be possible to find several parakeet and parrot species feeding on fruit trees along the way; also others as tanagers, seed eaters, oropendolas and magpie tanager.

12.30 p.m. Transfer to the city of Nauta, located on the shores of the Marañon River. Here you will board the boat that will take you to the Tambo Amazonico Lodge.
You will have the chance to see the confluence of the Marañon with the Ucayali River, thus giving birth to the mighty Amazon.
Lunch on the way. 5.30 p.m. Arrival in Tambo Amazónico.
Supper and overnight.

TUESDAY
DAY IV

Tambo Amazónico Lodge is located on the Yarapa River, which flows parallel to the Ucayali and later pours into the Amazon. It is the gateway to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and an excellent place for birdwatching, due to the fact that it is floodable jungle with countless oxbow lakes and thus an abundance of fish, which provide the food source for many birds, such as: the great egret, the snowy egret, the capped heron, the white necked heron, the striated heron. There are some others that feed on water plants, the horned screamer and the hoatzin. You may also find raptors, including the great black hawk, the black collar hawk, and the snail kite.

5.30 a.m. Boat tour on the Yarapa River to spot for ringed kingfisher, amazon kingfisher, pigmy kingfisher, sun bittenr-watteled jacanas and other raptors.

7.30 a.m. Breakfast.

9.00 a.m. Hike into the woods to observe antbirds, toucans, trogons cuckoos, woodpeckers and others.

12.30 p.m. Lunch.

3.00 p.m. Canoe ride on oxbow lake to birdwatch for horned screamers, oropendolas and raptors. If you wish, you may try fishing for piranha, which are abundant in these waters.

7.00 p.m. Supper.

8.00 p.m. Boat ride on the Yarapa to spot night birds and also caimans. Overnight.

WEDNESDAY
DAY V

5.30 a.m. Walk around Tambo Amazonico and visit to the “lick” where red and green macaws gather. The “lick” or “collpa” near Tambo Amazonico is found in a crease on a tree’s trunk, from which a liquid resin flows. A particularity of this resin is that it attracts a great number of noisy macaws that compete for a gush of it. The birds ingest the resin believed to contain minerals that neutralize the toxins from fruits and nuts.

7.30a.m. Breakfast.

9.00 a.m. Walk around the Jaldar Community where you may observe various tanagers, parakeets, hummingbirds, jacanas, cotingas and others. You could also observe the locals’ handicrafts.

12.30 p.m. Lunch.

1.30 p.m. Boat trip to the San Isidro shelter.

5.30 p.m. Arrival in San Isidro. Overnight. The San Isidro shelter is a camp in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, on the shores of the Yanayacu River where an impressive aviar fauna is found from which we can easily identify exotic birds such as the scarlet macaw, blue green macaw, umbrella birds, plum throated cotingas and many antbirds. Supper.
Overnight.

THURSDAY
DAY VI

6.00 a.m. Breakfast. Fullday boat trip on the Pucate River. This time you will sail deeper into the reserve. With a bit of luck you might spot the impressive Harpy Eagle which feeds on monkeys. Numerous primates can be seen on this trip, howling monkey, squirrel monkey, saddle backed tamarin

12.30 p.m. Lunch.
4.00 p.m. Arrival back to the San Isidro shelter.
Supper. Overnight.

FRIDAY
DAY VII

5.30 a.m. Tour by boat on the Yanayacu for early morning birdwatching.

7.30 a.m. Breakfast

8.30 a.m. Departure to the city of Nauta. Lunch in Nauta and later transfer by land to Iquitos.

4.00 p.m. Aprox. Arrival in Iquitos Overnight at your hotel.

SATURDAY
DAY VII

Continental Breakfast at the hotel Transfer to the airport at a convenient time
